For some time now, I’ve been meaning to thank Tracey McBride at Frugal Luxuries for mentioning me as one of “top 10″ bloggers who brighten her day. I’m terrible at following up with these things, but I did want to make my own list “ten things that make me happy.”  To begin, here are the first five:

    1. kittens. more specifically, the sound my kitten makes when climbing into her fleece bed, which is right next to mine. She kneads and kneads before settling in, giving off this gentle noise of the fabric being pulled by her tiny claws. I usually hear it just after I’ve climbed in myself, and knowing that she’s tucking in for the night, right beside me, gives a wonderful feeling of wellbeing.

Butternut, when she was about 3-4 months old

    2. pajamas. I love pajamas. I have heaps and heaps of them, and I keep them and wear them even when they are old and faded, because it seems that the more worn in the get, the more comfortable they get.  Soft cotton or flannel, elastic waist bands, childlike prints… what’s not to love?

    3. saturday mornings.  I try to make sure that my house is clean and tidy in preparation of Saturday morning - or at least my kitchen and living room, which is where I spend said mornings. My ritual includes leisurely coffee in my gorgeous white robe, which is another thing that makes me happy all in itself.  I save my really good coffee for weekend mornings so I thoroughly enjoy it. I gaze out of my balcony, catch up on my favourite blogs, look through design books or magazines, and generally savour some time to be quiet and alone.

    4. friends who inspire me.  The kind of friends who are out making a different in the world, innovating, thinking, creating. The kind of friends who inspire me to think differently, who challenge me, who listen to me, who spur my own creativity in new directions, who inspire me to keep going, keep creating, whose confidence gives me confidence in myself.

    5. the public library. Specifically, I love the feeling of bringing home a stack of books and dvds from the library.  Each new batch has something different. I love discovering new books on just about any subject.  Many books I’ll take out just to gaze at their pictures on Saturday mornings (see above.) And I’ll take out old sci-fi or Star Trek dvds without feeling guilty for renting something I’ve already seen 100 times, because after all, it’s free!

What are some simple things that make you happy?

    1. Right now? My stripey over-the-knee socks. Sometimes spending $6 for a really cool new pair of socks is totally worth it, especially if it pulls your thrift store wardrobe together.

    2. Mmmm Saturday mornings are the best. Hot cup of coffee, Saturday edition of the newspaper spread out in front of me, hubby beside me, and lazy breakfasts… Ahhhhhhhhh.

And sunshine. Sunshine fills me with an inexplicable sense of joy and relief.

    3. What a lovely list! I think my favourite thing right now is, having ended an unhealthy relationship, relief that a huge burden has been lifted and that I can move on and do what I need to do to make my future what I want it to be.

    4. “I try to make sure that my house is clean and tidy in preparation of Saturday morning”

You’d make a good Jewish housewife. :D Sounds like you have observing Shabbat almost down, except for making coffee and reading online blogs. ;)

    5. SQ~Love your list! Butternut is so sweet!
Here are a few of mine:
      Saturday mornings…..
My 58″ clawfoot tub. Love to soak reading my newest book from the library. My cat Cleo lies patiently on the bathmat waiting till I get out.
Then it is a leisurely breakfast with two delicious cups of coffee (we’re coffee snobs and grind our own) usually while doing a crossword puzzle.
By this time DH has had his fill of all the ‘exciting’ up to the minute (blah, blah, blah) sports updates while eating his breakfast.
Then if we’re not heading off somewhere we get involved with ‘homefun’. We are both ants, not grasshoppers, and we work away on things around the house.
DH and I always have a game of Yahtzi Mexican Poker (he’s whipping my butt good!) in the early afternoon each day.
By evening, after the decks are cleared in the kitchen, I like to sit and knit. I bought 26 (your read it right!) balls of Christmas yarn and am making afghans for gifts. I start on Christmas in January.
I am blessed to have so many wonderful things I love….don’t get me started on the people!

    6. Ohhh I love them all!! Your kitty has me smitten.
      Love,
      Tracey

      my husband. my beautiful husband.

our daughters. our greatest gift in life.

to walk. when i walk i see things i miss, like the tiny, tender buds that now are sprouting on sleepy branches.

deer, resting in the back lot on a sunny winter’s afternoon.

a really good movie that i lose myself in.

learning something new that excites me.

      the feeling of gratitude.

      a new day.

    8. Amber - your knee socks sounds super cute!

Kate - sunshine does bring relief, doesn’t it? especially this time of year!

Annie - I’m so sorry to hear that you were in an unhealthy relationship, but I’m very happy that you are out of it now, and free to move on with your life. I wish you all the best with the journey in front of you.

E - you’re making me laugh, as always!

Catherine - that list sounds sooo wonderful. (And PS I grind my own coffee too - there is a wonderful selection of whole bean coffees here in Guelph; it’s great!)

Tracey - I know, isn’t she a little doll? I love her so much!

Nancy - I love that you left off on “a new day”. Each new day is truly a gift, a fresh start.

    9. What a wonderful post! Your kitten is adorable–she reminds me of our cat Bonnie, but with brighter orange fur. And is that Thrifty Chic? It’s one of my favorites.

      Let’s see…five simple things I love:
      1) My 9 1/2 month old daughter’s little feet and toes. They’re so cute and soft!

      2) Taking walks around the neighborhood with my husband and aforementioned daughter. We like to look at houses while we’re out and make note of what we like/don’t like about them design-wise. It’s always fun.

      3) My local library. It LOOKS like a library: stone steps, high ceilings, a wonderful children’s room with a mural…and all the books!

      4) My kitties! I love watching them chase each other around the house.

      5) My morning cup of coffee or tea. It always perks me up.

    10. Cate, I can’t believe you were able to spot the book from that one picture - yes, it is Thrifty Chic!! Thanks for sharing the simple things you love - they are delightful! your daughter’s little feet and toes… how sweet! And I too love big old libraries like that. Majestic.
