A new season
Posted on September 1st, 2009 9 comments
It’s the first day of September, and to me that means it’s the start of a new chapter. It’s the start of a new season.
I can’t say I am thrilled that summer is coming to a close, but I’m actually somewhat excited for the new season. I think it’s because I’m looking forward to change. The Aboriginal Medicine Wheel, which I believe is pretty universal across the First Nations, has helped to shape the way I look at the meaning of the seasons and cycles in our lives. In the Medicine Wheel, the black component represents fall, which is a time of abundance, a time of harvest, a time of planning and preparing ahead for a long winter. It is a time of change.
As I venture out towards my new career path, I am simultaneously seeking changes to my lifestyle. Changes to my routines. Changes to my budget. Changes to the way I organize and manage my time. But I also want to make changes to my spirit.
This September I want to focus on a abundance and joy. I want to be grateful for what I have, live fully in the present, but simultaneously work hard to create a new, exciting future for myself.
There is a lot of open space in front of me. Some of it scares me. But I have to be grateful for the amazing gift that I have: my freedom. Not everyone in this world can say that, and I want to be cognizant of that, and also to what it means for me and my happiness.
Even though it’s not the start of a new year, it feels like it’s the start of a new life.
This September I will share my journey to find joy and abundance on a tight budget. That is, a very tight budget.

What a beautiful way to look at the coming of a new season. Fall has always been my favourite. I think I will also see Sept as the start of a new year-perhaps spending most of my life in school has that effect! I wish you lots of joy as you pursue this new path, and best of luck with the tight tight budget!

Technically the fall IS the start of the new year in some cultures and religions, such as mine.
In many of the Pagan and earth-based religions we celebrate Samhain (”sow-en”), in which we honour our ancestors, the Gods and celebrate the final harvest of the year before the Wheel turns us into the darker part of the year (winter). There’s lots more involved but there’s the basics.
Most people know our holiday as Halloween, but the holy day has been around for much longer and actually has nothing to do with the trappings of Halloween. The date was just imposed on ours
Anyway, I just thought it was fitting that you made that comment, because it fits in so perfectly with the natural turning of the year–your subconscious probably realizes it! The whole theme for the coming months is abundance and joy–what perfect timing for you! Take advantage of it!

In Judaism, Rosh Hashana - literally meaning the head of the year - is the Jewish new year, and it typically falls in September. Food for thought, along with Ginger’s note. Much love from the West.

Having a lot of open space can be scary. But you are in a great position, because of your great approach to managing money. I’m rooting for you, I know you can do it!

I second that!! I know you can do it too SQ
I loved your post btw - fall has always been my favourite… it truly has always felt like a new beginning to me. All the best! -
Crisp autumn air always brings me a sense of a fresh start. Maybe I still associate it with a new school year! I think this fall will again be a time of learning for me. I look forward to following your journey.

Wow, starting your own business. How exciting and scary, too. Just continue to believe in yourself, Saver Queen!
And that creative food looks deliscious! I am going to have to try that mushroom dish. Yummo!
