My best garage sale find yet!
Posted on June 3rd, 2009 13 commentsI love garage sales. It just makes so much sense, financially and environmentally speaking, to re-use what is already out there, instead of just assuming we need to go out and buy everything we want at full price.
During the last two weekends, I have visited garage sales and found some exceptional deals. In particular, I am looking for good quality, useful kitchen items, some of which I mentioned on the thrift list.

My best find, so far has been this Oster food processor, which retails for around $140 at Home Hardware, after tax. I was skeptical when I were told that this food processor was “out of the box” and had “never been used,” but after taking it home and carefully inspecting it, I discovered that it was true: this machine was in mint condition.
My Black & Decker food processor broke after a little more than 6 months of use (I’m appalled) and we needed a new one, as we use our food pro regularly. I’m so glad that I held off buying a new one long enough to take a look at other available options.
The best thing about our thrifted food processor? It only cost $10!
What great finds have you discovered this spring?

WOW! That is such a great find! I’ve been contemplating buying a food pro as well but seeing this makes me wonder whether I should try getting a deal like this!

I love finding deals like that at yard sales! Last year i got my coffee maker and a food sealer for a total of 9.00 at a yard sale. I was given a combination toaster.convection oven by a co-worker a couple of months ago. This year I want a food processor and a bread maker. I have to admit that I’m a tad bit envious over your find!

Great score! I picked up a new-in-the-box Cuisinart food processor a couple of years ago at a yard sale for $8, then the next summer found a full set of the disks and a rack to hold them for another two bucks. Woo hoo!! Best kitchen score so far this year is the brand new waffle iron for $3. I love that the outside of it is a nonstick surface as well as the baking area–makes cleanup so much easier.
Garage sales are the best!

Wow, I love hearing about everyone’s deals. The waffle iron sounds great! I would love to find a waffle iron in great condition.
To everyone considering making a new purchase like Bee, my best suggestion is to hold off until the end of the summer to buy it, if possible. I already made the mistake of buying a new ironing board for $60 and then seeing a perfectly decent one at a roadside yard sale for 25¢!!
I forgot to mention how well the Oster food pro works - it’s waaay better than the B&D. It’s much, much quieter - the other one was really unpleasant to run because of the noise.

PS Sam - I saw a breadmaker at a garage sale last weekend, so hopefully you will find one too!

That is an amazing find! I once bought a waffle maker (we still use it 12 years later!) at a garage sale. Brand new, in the box. $3 When I got home a WEDDING CARD fell out of the box. Guess they didn’t need that gift!

My best deal of many of them probaly was the biggest kitchen tool I ever owned. I bought a 20 quart Hobart mixer and spare attachments for $5.00. Almost could not load it since it weighed almost 200 pounds. Of course i had to sale it since it would not fit in my kitchen.
