Realizations on the need-to-have
Posted on May 9th, 2009 12 comments
I discovered these beautiful earrings when cleaning out my craft room. They were hidden in a cute little bag in one of my crowded craft drawers. I bought them in Austin, Texas, last September. I don’t think I’ve ever worn them – in fact, I think they were hiding away all this time. I’d completely forgotten about them.

I also discovered this pen and ink set. Josh bought this during a boxing day sale at an art store in January, 2008. It’s been sitting in that little box, untouched, for more than a year.
That’s what happens when you get organized – you find all kinds of stuff around your house that, at the time, you thought you needed to have, and then you completely forget about or never use.
Getting organized is a great way to jump start a more frugal life. I blogged about the benefits in An Exercise in Frugality, part one. Many things we buy seem important at the time, but really aren’t. Certainly they aren’t necessary to have right now. The truth is, we can get by, and live joyfully, with a lot less than we think.
What do you have in your home that you bought but never used? Books you haven’t read? Clothes you haven’t worn?

That was a benefit for me as well when I cleaned. Now all of my favourite items are with me, and the “meh” ones are not, which makes dressing in the morning easier!

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I’ve been hearing that the US govt. has pending regulations about making us responsible for the lead content of stuff sold at our yard sales, so maybe they were inspired by the Canadians! People are all upset at the idea, but I figure anything in my house is something I thought was safe for us to use, so why would it be dangerous for someone else? And besides, how could I go back and sue someone who sold me a ‘dangerous’ object since I never have the faintest idea afterwards where a particular yard sale was?
I like your blog, some good thrifty ideas.

One think I used to do, but have gotten a lot better at, is buying clothes that are on sale/great price, but are a little too small for me. Because if I lost a few pounds they would fit… well I never lots those few pounds and never wore the clothes. I always ended up donating them or giving them friends. Now I always ask my self, do I need this, when will I wear this when I am shopping.

Queen of Fifty Cents – I agree – if it’s safe for your family, it should be safe for another family. I think all you really need is some common sense.
JamsWife – I’ve bought clothes or shoes that were a bit too small too, if I really, really loved them. Now I don’t buy anything that is not totally comfortable because otherwise I know I won’t wear it.

I still find the odd piece of clothing with tags still on and have several books that I haven’t read yet… And I’m bad for buying things (like nice candles, bath stuff) and not using it up for a long time. I always wait for the special occasion that sometimes doesn’t come for a while, or never does!
Those earrings are lovely

Seems like new guests keep dropping by your blog everytime I look…the wise words of SQ seem to be spreading like the flu…but in a good way.
Who’s not guilty of buying things and never using it? I’m certainly guilty. I’ve got a couple clothes and a couple books (and a recently purchased expensive knife still in it’s packaging) that have yet to be used. But I think I’ve come to understand why. I’ve come to like the “new-ness” of things. Since I’m not one to splurge on myself (although I’ve gotten better on that lately) – I guess it’s growing up in a lower income bracket – , having something new around seems to bring an improved sense of self-worth – as foolish as that sounds. That, plus I have huge difficulty breaking something in – getting past that first-use stage. Once I get past that first use however, then that item becomes a regular part of my wardrobe (if it’s clothing). Let’s hope I never come across a virgin…LOL!

I’m guilty of clothes in the closet with tags still on them. only 3 items I can think of but still…
I also have a TON of art supplies that I often forget I have. I’m realy hoping to have more creative time this year now that my son is 3 1/2. Hopefully I can have a little “me” time once in a while. Pen & ink is one of my favourite mediums and watercolour pencils.I also have quite a few dvds that I haven’t watched yet. Most of them I’ve seen before, but I’ve stopped buying dvds unless it’s something I absolutely love. No more CDs either.

Oh Dear. Do I have to tell you?
My downfalls are books that I don’t always read (I am remedying this currently) as well as cute little doodads I always want to do something with, but have a tendancy to store away and forget about.
But in my defense, I have kids that distract me:)

I used to have the same problem with books.. but since I’ve restarted using the library that problem was solved. I still really would love to buy new books but if I can get them for free at the library it just doesn’t make sense. Plus, it’s re-using an item and good for the enviroment which is becoming a personal goal I’m working on. Clothes, let’s say I’m getting there lol.. I love new clothes…sigh.
@ Erran – a virgin lol – hilarious!

This happens to me ALL THE TIME. It’s one of the reasons I am looking forward to my closet clean out. I am expecting some good surprises..

Here here Saverqueen!! I recently cleaned out my bathroom vanity and gave myself a strict talking to. I am not allowed to set foot back in Bath and Body Works until I used ALL the products in my cupboard, and I am not allowed to buy any lipbalm or lipgloss until ALL the ones in my cupboard are gone. I don’t know what I was stockpiling these things for-a lip dryness emergency? I think I counted over 30 lip products-foolishness. A great reminder to appreciate all that we have!!f
