Crunchy Chicken has a sustainability challenge starting this month to find out if eating sustainably necessarily means spending more.

So far I’ve certainly found ways to integrate local eating while reducing, not increasing cost.  As I’ve mentioned before, some local options for meat and eggs may be more costly, but veggies can be cheaper and so can other products, like flour.  Recently I stopped by the Arva flour Mill (a rare original flour mill in SouthWestern Ontario) and picked up a bag of whole wheat flour - it was certainly no more expensive, perhaps even cheaper than what you would find in a grocery store for similar quality flour.

Plus, I love the simple packaging it comes in - a simple brown bag with white stitching.

Now for some gratuitously cute shots of someone who was incredibly curious about this new bag…

While I won’t be taking Crunchy Chicken’s challenge, it’s an ongoing exploration to see how I can eat frugally yet sustainably.

    1. This is what I’m working on, too. I think that eating seasonally and preserving can also really help. What I’ve done recently is to join a buying club that carries local and organic food. Their prices are really good compared to supermarkets, I’ve been really happy with them.

    2. I’m working on eating more fresh foods while still maintaining my same budget. I don’t think it’s too difficult, but there are times when it’s challenging. I love how you got some local flour! I bet it’s awesome! I’m wondering if we have any local mills around here? Hmm…

    3. There is something on Food Network Canada about eating locally (100 mile diet) that should be interesting to watch…

I am buying a food share for 22 weeks from nearby organic growers. I’m excited!! It’s going to be expensive up-front, but I’m sure it’s going to decrease my weekly grocery spending.

We have a mill a few hours away, I should look into their products too!

    4. Hi there-the flour was a very good buy-you really are doing very well indeed, keep up the good work my dear!
