On the weekend, Josh made pita bread.  Correction, he made the best pita bread in the world.  This was his very first try and I can’t believe how perfect it came out.  It really made me wonder why we’d ever buy store bought pita bread again, when it tastes this good fresh, and is so easy and cheap to make.  Rather than posting the recipe here, I will simply direct you to The Fresh Loaf - they have detailed instructions along with really beautiful pictures.

Josh also baked a whole wheat loaf - well, 20% whole wheat, anyway - and it was spectacular.  Really moist and fluffy on in the inside and nice and crusty on the outside.  He also made the best grilled cheese sandwiches with this bread and some old cheddar. It’s really a far cry from our first try back in October.

Meanwhile, Butternut enjoyed her own frugal luxury - namely, the paper that came with the spice package on Friday. Apparently, paper is the best toy in the world, and also the comfiest place to nap.

What frugal activities did you do this weekend?

    1. oh i love pita bread!!!

    2. I’m so inspired by your bread-making success. I made Indian food this weekend, and was tempted to try my hand at naan, but I chickened out and bought it instead. However, making the main dishes saved a lot of money, since Indian take-out is a fortune, so I feel good about that. In answer to your question about frugal weekend activities, I planned meals for the week trying to maximize what I had in the house, and cooked food at home instead of going out. I also had fun watching a movie on TV and eating popcorn with my friend, rather than paying to go to the theatre and buying ridiculously expensive snacks.

As an aside, I don’t understand why anyone would buy cat toys. In our house a paper shopping bag is the best possible entertainment for our feline.

    3. psychsarah - i want to try making naan too! i’ve never done it before but it looks pretty easy. i just found a recipe in my gigantic indian cookbook. what kind of indian food did you make? sounds like you did lots of fun frugal activities, great to hear!

    4. Made beer soup!

Seriously. It was delicious, and we had everything on hand.

    5. Actually I made garlic naan this weekend! I made indian too, I make my own paneer as well. The naan is super easy, here is the recipe I use:

    6. I made chana masala, chicken tikka, and I roasted cauliflower with curry and tumeric (probably not technically Indian, but with Indian inspiration). It was a fun and frugal feast :)

Miss M-thanks for the link. I’m going to check it out and give it a go next time around.

    7. Great post! Are you able to post your recipes for these breads? I have yet to find a good pita recipes (that turned out successfully) nor have I found a great whole wheat (ish) bread.

      Thanks in advance!!

    8. Wow, all these Indian dishes sound amazing - thanks for sharing, everyone!

Hi Allie - you can find the link for the recipe for the pita on my post but I will most definitely post the recipe for the bread. I’ll post it in the next couple of days.

    9. I’ve been making all of our bread for almost a year - so much better than what you buy in the store. I haven’t tried pita bread yet - that sounds yummy!

      Thanks for sharing!

    10. Very impressive, making your bread. Looks great. Glad you joined us at Tempt My Tummy Tuesday, today.

    11. Thanks for the link and the pictures! I want to try it.

    12. [...] These burgers are a also a great frugal alternative to store bought veggie burgers. If you or a family member wants to join in on BBQ fun but is a vegetarian, then you will find these burgers an affordable option. Your most expensive part of the burgers will be the walnuts, which can be purchased in a bulk food store, and since the walnuts need to be chopped, you can opt for pre-chopped walnuts or walnut pieces, which are less expensive than their whole counterparts. Mushrooms and lentils are cheap, and you can even make your own buns if you so desire, or serve in homemade pita bread! [...]
