More frugal luxuries
Posted on March 20th, 2009 7 comments
I’m taking notice of all the frugal luxuries in my life this week. Yesterday one of my frugal luxuries was a surprise private session with my yoga instructor. I was the only one to turn out at my therapeutic yoga class yesterday, and while everyone who takes the class is great, it was very special to have some one-on-one time with my favourite instructor. It gave us time to move slowly, consciously, and talk. I was able to share with her my biggest frugal luxury that I’ve been enjoying for about 6 weeks now - the fact that I’ve seen a 90% reduction in pain. Living with chronic pain affects all areas of your life, including how you feel about yourself. I’ve carried a lot of guilt, frustration and embarrassment about the pain that I’ve been harbouring. And now, I wake up in the morning feeling normal. My body feels free, it feels light. I hope that I can maintain this lightness, and I hope that I can help others who are struggling as well.
A few other frugal luxuries:

My friend from university came and stayed with me on Monday and Tuesday. She brought me these orchids. I’ve never had orchids before but I absolutely love them. They have them at my yoga studio and I love meditating in front of them. I love the tiny little clip that gently helps to guide and support the orchid as it grows.

This morning I sat my plants in front the window to catch the sun before it disappeared. Then I decided I needed a little sun myself, so I sat and drank my coffee on my floor pillow, next to my plants. (Butternut joined me as well, of course.) If that’s not a frugal luxury, I don’t know what is!
I hope you can enjoy some frugal luxuries today and take note of all the finer things in your life.

I just thought of a *sort of* frugal luxury that most people don’t take advantage of.
The extras that we pay for in our work benefit plans. My husband’s plan covers us for a certain amount of chiropractic care, massage therapy, physio therapy, naturopatic doctors, dieticians, etc.
This past year I started seeing a chiropractor and taking advantage of massage therapy. I can’t begin to tell you how much this has benefited me. We pay good money for these services to be available to us, why not take adavantage of them?
I’m also very lucky to have great dental benefits. My gums & teeth are looking super!!If you have a benefit plan, take the time to learn what is available to you. It could do you a world of good! Get your monies worth!

SQ~
How wonderful that you are almost pain free! What a relief for you. Your orchids are beautiful and I smiled when I read that butternut enjoys the sun with you.
You hit home when you mentioned your frustration and embarrassment - I’m guilty of that too - although in hoping I don’t jinx myself, I had TWO good days this week! -
It’s not the high life, but definitely a tranquil moment which is without a doubt a luxury in this fast-paced, get-so-much-done world.
Really happy to hear your pain is being wrangled in. That’s awesome! Keep fighting it down SQ! You’re doing well! I need to try yoga out myself…I can’t even remember the last time I stretched the ol’ muscles out, and given my hunching-over-a-laptop job, I can’t imagine the screams my little muscle fibres are making each day. Bikram sounds very interesting.
Here’s a recent frugal luxury - a moment of tranquility if you will. Was in Vancouver this past week for a couple days. Had been raining for those two days (surprised aren’t you? :P). But really, I didn’t mind. I actually love the rain - yeah, I’m one of those folks. So cloudy, grey, gloomy, and I’m in my element. But to make things better, as I’m flying out back home, it clears up a few hours prior (go figure!). Vancouver, with the mountains in the backdrop, clear blue skies with patches of white fluffy clouds, and the sun oh-ever-so close to retiring for the day. That is wonderment and beauty captured. And a luxury that can never be bought…well, ok, to live in Vancouver requires much money so yes, that has to be bought in a way.
Needless to say, flying into Winnipeg, all drab and dirty (we’re in seasonal transition from winter to spring), kills the soul oh-just-so-ever slightly. Le sigh.I think I’m a Vancouver-baby who happened to be raised in the prairies…

I have enjoyed your posts on frugal luxuries. My daughter has chronic pain and I am wondering what you have done to relieve your situation. How long have you dealt with pain?
Thanks for the beautiful pictures! -

Melaniesd - it’s so true, it just makes sense to take advantage of the benefits when you have them. You’re right, we pay for them so why not enjoy them?
Catherine - glad to hear you’ve had 2 good days. i’ll be hoping for more for you!
Charlotte - so sorry to hear this about your daughter. What does she suffer from? I had pain for about 4.5 years. The therapeutic yoga and gentle yoga I do seems to have made a big difference. I also got a posture-pedic mattress which I also believe has made a big impact. Breathing exercises and meditation can also go a long way in reducing pain, although it requires discipline and a lot of practice! I hope that helps.
