• What not to do with used coffee grounds

Canadian Living magazine is usually full of fab frugal tips and I can’t fault them for being creative, but this month’s issue has crossed the line by offering up ideas on how to use old coffee grounds.

The absolute worst (and on the top of their list) was:

Mix with a little olive oil to make an excellent exfoliant for the shower (rub vigorously on any spots of cellulite).

Um.  The sentence should end with …”and you will be cured from ever wanting to drink coffee again.”

I don’t know about you, but there are few worse things I can imagine doing to myself with my used wet coffee grounds than rubbing them all over my body, whilst naked, in the shower.  When I am finished with my coffee grounds, I do what every normal person does: bin them.

And not that I really expect old coffee grounds to eradicate cellulite, but even if it did, I think I would rather make peace with my body than rub wet, brown gunk all over my ass. Heaven help me if it clogged up the shower drain.

Their second ingenious tip is to sit the grounds in the fridge for a fresh scent (have you ever smelled used coffee grounds?) and add a few drops of vanilla (sure, vanilla and coffee, that’s a good match).

Lastly, use as a “natural abrasive cleaner for stainless-steel pots and pans.”  Okay, so at least that doesn’t involve my body, but I still don’t feel like taking something which should obviously be classified as garbage and mixing it with my cookware.

These tips really contrast with my personal frugal philosophy – that frugality is about enjoying simple pleasures, not acting in masochistic ways.

By the way, if you want to make a frugal shower scrub from products around the house that doesn’t stink, try these treasures from Tipnut.  I notice one recipe does include fresh coffee grounds.

Or for a “green” tip to make your coffee habit more ecologically friendly, learn about composting your grounds – a tip from Starbucks.

    1. Ha ha.

Coffee grounds in the shower! Wow.

      No thanks! ;)

    2. So closed minded! Come on…a little scrub scrub never hurt anyone. Ha ha. Now maybe if I drank coffee I’d understand your repulsion at the idea…

    3. Okay I just saw a body sugar scrub made with coffee grounds..weird huh?

    4. LOL-Yes, neither of these ideas sound very nice, there are lots of other things I’d rather scrub my body with!!

    5. *LAUGHS*!!!!!!

I love that line about being masochistic with coffee grounds.

I’ve heard people saying to use sugar or baking soda as well, but that is seriously HARSH on your skin!

A light scrub with a washcloth is the most you should do to your skin..

    6. I’m with you sister!
I think that’s nasty – not t o mention cleaning the tub of coffee grounds after my shower – no thanks!

    7. @nobel pig – indeed weird, however were they fresh or used? the idea of using fresh, while unattractive, is not as repulsive as used ones, in my opinion!

    8. I like the idea of composting the grounds, but couldn’t get the link to work. It may just be my computer here – it blocks a lot of sites, but maybe you could check it out.

    9. Oops – sorry – the link is fixed now, I had made a mistake. Thanks for pointing it out! Hope it is useful!!

    10. My mother has always used it as a fertilizer in her garden, it also prevents neighbourhood cats and dogs from doing their business in her garden ( She lives in Mexico city, lots of dogs). It works!

    11. HaHa!! Seriously laughed out loud here!!
Rubbing coffee grounds all over your body sounds like the person is losing touch with reality.

Who would really take them into the shower?? They’re staining as it is..look at the gunk build-up you get that needs cleaning out never mind smearing on yourself & then really giving the shower/tub a good cleaning!

You’d be wasting so much soap/bodywash & water just to clean & “feel” clean after that.
**YUCK** I’ve heard they’re not to do down the drain anyways. I’ll never try this. There’s other ways like lemon juice, baking soda and the like if you go natural…but this goes too far.

    12. OK, rubbing something on my butt is going to remove cellulite? Not so much.

I am suddenly very glad that I’ve never been a coffee drinker.

    13. Lol thanks for the laugh SQ, I totally needed that after today!!

    14. Um, I heard this tip years ago and I’ve tried it! It was a show about the secrets of top models or something. The caffeine is supposed to help tighten skin in addition to the exfoliation action. Grounds are small enough to wash down the drain, never fear. I’ve made all sort of masks and scrubs from stuff in the kitchen, never weirded me out. Of course you could just compost them if you want to reuse without reusing on your body!

    15. Fun post! Thanks for the great laugh!

    16. heehee, glad you enjoyed it everyone!
Miss M – I’m sure everyone will agree that you are one adventurous lady!

    17. Very funny! HAHA!

    18. Very interesting post, as are some of your other posts. I have bookmarked your great site for future visits.

    19. One great thing you _can_ do with used coffee grounds is to put them into your compost heap. It’s organic and will break down just like everything else you chuck in there. No point throwing them away when they can still be put to good use :-)

    20. It actually works, though you don’t have to add anything, and it has to be used coffee grounds. Do it in the shower, and wrap with saran wrap. Leave it on for 5-15 minutes, then rinse. You can tell after just one use. The other way I know of is squats modified so that when you squat, you do a rocking motion and put your weight on one leg, which is slightly out. Either can be looked up. Something with the chemicals in coffee reacts with it. You can get free coffee grounds from starbucks in a pretty little bag if you don’t drink coffee. I don’t know how big you are, or how much you have, but it’s a simple way and I’ve not found a better one that worked as fast. The only catch is, it’s a lifetime thing. If you stop, it will come back, slowly but surely. These will help with the mess and maybe a bit of the smell. http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=7299385

    21. ok…listen…there really isn’t anything wrong with the idea of a coffee scrub…the coffee grounds are not dirty in any way…they were actually sterilized by the boiling hot water that you use to make the coffee so what’s the problem? I’m 16 and i make sugar and coffee scrubs at home…my rocky road scrub smells wonderful, and it’s rather relaxing even though the caffeine in the coffee is being soaked into your pores, it also makes it look like you have a wonderful (not orange) tan that makes your skin glow with health…yes health…because the abrasive qualities of the grinds lifts away dead skin cell particles that dull the skin potential radiance. And they’re safe to put down the drain…and if you don’t want to take 30 seconds to rinse off the tub floor (if you’re taking a bath) then you’re just plain lazy! because if you’re taking a shower while exfoliating…most of the grinds are already down the drain by the time that you’re finished! Geez…so pessimistic…..

    22. I would like to leave a comment to all of those that prefer to waste their times to be negative about something that they didnt even have the guts to try. To those that laught about making homemade products your probably the ones over spending on getting their nails done and wasting money at the spa for over bearing amounts of money.
I tried the coffee scrub and infact i even played with the recipe and made cocoa scrub and it was delightful and the olive oil, almond oil, vitamine E oil and which hazel that i added to it made my skin feel EXTREMELY soft! so the next time you want to sit arround a computer to blog negativity about something you’ve never tried before maybe you should actually try it first!

the last laugh about this is I have more money in my pockets to spend on clothes this weekend from saving of spending crazy money at spas that USES the SAME ingredents!
your just too ignorant to notice!

    23. Well I have read a lot of reports about the coffee scrub, but I would like to say that I have used it on my feet and I seem and awesome working from the coffee scrub, I also used it in the shower it leave the body feeling really good. Maybe it not for you so don’t knock it. It just might help someone else.
      Different stroke for different folks.

    24. actually i did try this but I have lots of little ruff skin spots ( skin condition) and lotions and most bought scrubs etc never work. I tried this last night and im sorry but i felt awake and my skin was like a baby .. so the people who think its garbage well.. if you just brewed coffee whats wrong with using it for something esp if it works.

    25. [...] of whether or not to use old, wet coffee grinds to remove cellulite. In a post titled, “What not to do with used coffee grounds,” I drew my own frugal line in the sand when I mocked the idea of scrubbing my bum with soggy [...]

    26. You all sound so ignorant. One thing is not limited to one purpose, just because you grew up to coffee being in the pot doesn’t mean that’s all there is to coffee. Geez.
