Gone couponing
Posted on January 6th, 2009 9 commentsWhere is your favourite place to shop?
I am amazed in the difference in prices between stores. In fact if you want to trim your food budget back, switching to low-budget stores like Food Basics and Price Chopper can make a big difference.
Of course, not everyone has access to their store of choice, depending where you live and whether or not you have access to a vehicle, but if you do have the option, I highly recommend shopping around. Some of the more expensive stores like Loblaws feature a few excellent deals, but if you’re going to stray off your list or go for a big “stock up” then a cheaper store will be your best bet.
Yesterday we had an excellent shopping experience at Food Basics. We filled our cart for $130 and got some great deals. I used the following coupons:
$2 off Kellogs cereal (used two of them) - on sale for $2.49 - final price $1.49 each
$1 off Sunlight concentrated liquid laundry detergent (32 loads) - on sale for $6.99 - final price $5.99 each
75¢ off High Liner fish fillets (Salmon was on sale for $3.99 but I bought Haddock at $4.99 - final price $4.24)
50¢ off Naturegg Omega 3 eggs
$1 off Pataks (used two of them)
$1 off Catelli whole wheat pasta (when you buy two)
$1 off Purina cat food
50¢ off Yves Ground Round
50¢ off Rosenberg blue cheese
40¢ off Carr’s crackers
50¢ off Source yogurt
Total coupon value: $12.15
The cashier did not mind all the coupons at all and was incredibly friendly, reminiscing about the time her husband was on worker’s comp and became a coupon expert himself.
There were tons of great coupons in the store and on the products themselves, so remember to keep an eye out for coupons at the store. I found:
50¢ off Source yogurt
75¢ off select Kellogs cereals
50¢ off Motts Fruit sensations
$1 off Kleenex
$1 off Catteli whole wheat pasta (when you buy two)
$1 off Blue water fish (when you buy two)
50¢ off Yves Ground Round
$1 off Whole Grain Brown Minute Rice
75¢ off Lactancia margarine
I also got a bunch of coupons with my NaturaEggs:
$1 off Ocean Spray
$1 off Mazola no stick cooking spray
50¢ Astro Zero Yogurt
75¢ off Lactancia Olivina Margarine
$1 off Splenda
$1 off Maxwell House coffee
It also came with a free sample of Splenda
The Beatrice milk I bought came with coupons too - including two coupons for $1 off Beatrice milk, 2 $1 off coupons for Astro yogurt and $1 off Black Diamond shredded cheese and $1 off Smart Cheese strings.
The Dempsters bread we bought also came with a special offer: collect 10 UPCs and get a Hamilton Beach Sandwich Grill.
Have you been using coupons lately? Please share any great coupon findings!

PS: Question: I am considering adding a Grocery Round-Up feature where I compare prices in flyers and point out the best deals. Anyone interested in this?

Not a coupon find, but a grocery one. I was at Loeb the other day and stopped to compare prices on jarred roasted red peppers. I was floored (FLOORED!) to discover that the Super-Fancy Organic Name Brand roasted reds were double the size and a dollar cheaper than the Unico brand (there were no store brand roasted reds)- and they weren’t even on sale!
It pays to pay attention. Turns out organic and fancy-schmancy don’t always have to mean super expensive!

I’d love to see a comparison!

I love coupons! (would love to see the ‘deals’ but we aren’t in the same areas! bummer!)

Sounds like a great idea - might be hard to do with readers living in different areas - but certainly would be worth a try !
Glad your move went well and welcome back - we missed you !

So nice to meet you and thank you for dropping by my bloggy blog. I do use coupons. Most of the food I buy doesn’t often go on sale, but I do keep my eyes peeled for some pennies off.

Hey SQ, thanks for dropping by my blog. I’m from the west end of T.O. originally but moved to the Kawarthas over ten years ago. I’ve been back to the big city to live and work a couple of times over the past decade but there’s just something about cottage country that keeps drawing me back (such as my job).
I’m a big fan of the Chopper myself but I got into the habit of driving down to the Independent grocer, which was more of a one-stop shop for me, with a Presidents Choice bank machine, PC products, photofinishing, etc. plus the cheapest gas station in town right next door. Now that we’ve moved I’m not as close to my beloved grocery store, and it will be back to the Chopper for us. Which is excellent from a frugal perspective.
Keep in touch!

I love coupons and use them too! I called for the family pack of coupons from Johnson and Johnson and they sent a coupon for a free baby product and two more for a $1 off! I use lots of coupons from save.ca as well as store coupons and coupons from magazines and newspaper flyers. Last week I found an extra coupon for a free Glade Wisp flameless candle in a clip and save type flyer in the Newspaper. The candle was $9.99 and I got it for free! It smells great!
I usually shop at A&P which I know is more expensive but we buy meat on sale and use lots of coupons and get airmiles too!
I also like shopping at Independent Grocer for the one stop shopping as well. They have a great baby clothes section at the one I am close to and I bought my daughter tonnes of summer clothes for this coming summer last fall! Everything from t-shirts, sundresses, shorts, bathing suits and shoes were $1-$3 each! All the clothes are stylish and you get PC points too! -
I just saved $107.38 and only spent $104.92 on a week’s worth of groceries-publix! I spent $5.40 at Walgreens and SAVED $115.97!! Target has electrosol dishwashing tabs on sale for $3.25 and when you use the $2.50 off coupon from this week’s paper-you pay only .75 cents!

I would love to see a comparison! We always go to Great Canadian Superstore, but I know other places are way cheaper, show me and I’ll probably change my ways!
