Some big changes ahead for the Saver Queen.

Last Friday was the last day on the job for me as a Fundraiser.  I really enjoyed certain aspects of the job (I worked in the area of personal giving, also called planned giving, in the nonprofit sector, that deals with stocks & securities, gifts in wills, life insurance, and so on).  Unfortunately, the organization was just not utilizing me to my full potential.  I am the kind of person who has a passion for innovation. I get excited about change.  I love finding new and better ways to do things.  The charitable sector is changing - we are on the crest of a new wave of philanthropy - and I want to work at an organization that is willing to ride that wave, that supports change, recognizes talent, encourages innovation, and shares a vision with its employees.  Unfortunately, the organization that I worked for did not do any of those things.

I had contemplated a change for a while, half-hazardly working towards my own business ideas and goals, but the decision was made more easily when Josh got a new job out of town.  We have both actually been looking at new opportunities months now.  A good thing, as all our preparation enabled us to change gears swiftly when the company he was working for started to crumble.

With interviews in San Francisco, Austin Texas, and Montreal, and no real outcome for either of us, Josh was made an offer and we will be moving to the small town of Guelph, Ontario, in early January.

I have mentioned on the site (and on Gail’s site) very briefly that I will be starting my own business.  Well, I will save a more detailed explanation for another day.  Essentially I am giving myself one year to develop a couple of exciting web businesses I have in mind.  It’s very scary and the prospect of “falling behind” my peers is one that I find threatening to my identity.  But on the other hand, I’m thrilled.  I look forward to taking full advantage of my creativity and resourcefulness and putting it into action.  I’ve always dreamed of becoming an entrepreneur.  It’s a dream I’ve had for more than 10 years. Whatever happens, it will be an adventure.

Does anyone else have exciting changes or plans for the New Year?

    1. I’ve made huge personal changes in the year 2008. I packed up my little city life and went south….. I’m no longer in the world of Fashion , i’m now a substitute teacher and college student. I have taken a step back from my peers also and decided to redirect my path as my quarter life is coming to an end ( no I’m not dying , just about to reach 30) ouch…..I have also started an non-profit and fundraising group. I’m enjoying this transitional phases and I wouldn’t change anything for the world because I know 2009 is mine…. good luck to you and you family. HAPPY Holiday’s

    2. Wow Rosilen, what incredible changes. So cool! I love how you say that 2009 is yours… what a wonderful thought. Have a wonderful holiday and thank you for sharing your inspiring story!

    3. No big changes for me. I just wanted to wish you all the best in your new ventures. :-)

    4. Take full charge of your business plans and move forward with a passionate rush!!!

Best of wishes to you and Josh’s new journey! Hi-Ho!

      :-)

    5. HUGE changes coming up, although we’re not exactly sure what they are.

SO is in TO, I am in Ottawa. I have a spectacular job, but it’s only a term until October, SO has an okay job but it’s permanent. Neither of us has had great offers in either city, but we can’t keep commuting like this (not the least of which is that it’s crazy expensive!)

This year will be a role of the dice in many ways…

I wish you great luck and lots of patience!

    6. OMG I loved living in Guelph many years ago. Make sure to do little drives around the country backroads. There are some great egg places and syrup places that are just side of the road operations.

Big changes here all depend on what happens with my sister. Til we’re no longer on “death watch” life is on hold.

Enjoy your new life and best of luck in the businesses you start, I look forward to reading about them here.

    7. Good luck on your new adventures. I have no doubt that you will succeed at whatever challenges you choose to take on.

Guelph is a lovely spot to make your home base.

      Enjoy!

    8. SQ-You go, girl! : )
You put together an excellent and visually appealing blog and you keep pumping out good ideas and tips.
I look forward to reading your December 2009 blog, in future, as you look back on 2009 and see this all worked out for the best.
I love that you have refused to plateau and now you can go where you can expand and follow your dreams.

I’m really excited to focus 2009 on my finances. In the past, my New Year’s Resolutions always revolved around something materialistic and of course, 3 weeks into January, I’d never stick with it. I wasn’t able to clue in before to focus on the finances. I’d save, I’d spend, I’d save, I’d spend over the years and I did this without truly thinking about what I was doing.
      ~~Thanks for your great blog~~

    9. SQ - Good luck to you on your big move and fresh start. I think you will have a great year, and from your attitude, I think your business ideas will flourish!

2009 I plan on getting rid of our debt - not much left, but want it gone! I will also be looking for a part time job, as my youngest will be starting school full time in Sept. 09 which will give me some free time. Being a stay at home mom is great, but some extra money coming in wouldn’t be such a bad idea either! I also look forward to your blog, as it is now a daily staple for me, along with Gail’s blog. Great way to start the day! Thanks!

    10. Can’t wait to hear all about your new business!
